You Get Better Behavior With Praise Oct 4, 2007
Praise Your Way to
Better Behavior
October 4, 2007

Wouldn't it be nice if puppy training wasn't so focused on reprimanding? Try positive reinforcement. It works by giving rewards for behaviors you want rather than punishments for those you don't. A few suggestions for making this work:

Be prompt. Reward your pet immediately, so she knows what she did right.
Be consistent. Always use the same command for the same behavior.
Be flexible. For more complicated tricks, reward your dog for coming close to the desired behavior, so she knows she's on the right track.
Be patient. At first, you'll need to reward with treats every time, and then gradually move toward using verbal praise until a "Good girl!" is enough to keep her obeying.
