Praise Your Way to Better Behavior | October 4, 2007 |
Wouldn't it be nice if puppy training wasn't so focused on reprimanding? Try positive reinforcement. It works by giving rewards for behaviors you want rather than punishments for those you don't. A few suggestions for making this work:
| • | Be prompt. Reward your pet immediately, so she knows what she did right. | | • | Be consistent. Always use the same command for the same behavior. | | • | Be flexible. For more complicated tricks, reward your dog for coming close to the desired behavior, so she knows she's on the right track. | | • | Be patient. At first, you'll need to reward with treats every time, and then gradually move toward using verbal praise until a "Good girl!" is enough to keep her obeying. |
